- Indian para-athlete Mariyappan Thangavelu competed in the high jump at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro and the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, representing her country.
- In Tamil Nadu, Mariyappan Thangavelu was born into a low-income household. His mother Saroja began working as a daily wage laborer to raise all six of her children after her father abandoned the family a long time ago, but she eventually started selling vegetables owing to health issues.
- When Mariyappan was five years old, he was injured in an accident while strolling from his house to school. Abruptly, an inebriated bus driver abruptly drove the vehicle’s wheel over his leg. His right leg ceased functioning as a result of the bus’s weight crushing his leg below the knee. But he persisted in his studies during this trying period.
- Mariyappan loved volleyball at first, but after receiving advice from a tutor, he chose to switch to high jumping.
- During a national contest, Indian high jump coach Satyanarayana saw Mariyappan. He then drove him to Bangalore to receive his athletic training. In a conversation, Mariyappan stated: –
After seeing me at a national meet, he came to my house to meet my family and assured them that he had arranged for my boarding and lodging in college and trained me in Bengaluru for almost two years. He was like a friend to me and supported me through every practice and every day.”
- Following his gold medal victory, the Ministry of Youth and Sports awarded him a financial prize of Rs 75 lakh, and the Tamil Nadu government declared that it will pay him Rs 2 crore. In addition, it was disclosed that he will receive Rs 15 lakh from Sachin Tendulkar’s fund. Additionally, Yash Raj Films declared a Rs. 10 lakh cash reward. Following his gold medal triumph at the Rio Paralympics in 2016, the Delhi Golf Club guaranteed him a cheque for Rs 10 lakh.
- With the aid of this prize money, Mariyappan built his mother a house and purchased her a paddy farm so that both his mother and brother could work there and make a reliable living.
